Robert Jerrard has made fundamental and deeply original contributions to the mathematical study of topological defects, such as quantized vortex filaments, in solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations. His work has opened up and developed whole new avenues of research and has had a profound impact on disparate areas of mathematical analysis, including geometric measure theory and the calculus of variations.
