In Memory of Robert Barrington Leigh and Alfonso Gracia-Saz
The University of Toronto Undergraduate Mathematics Contest has been held annually since 2001. Professor Barbeau has been hosting this since inception to provide an opportunity for undergraduate students to compete, practice their competition skills, and to help identify Putnam candidates. It is open to all undergraduate students with an interest in mathematics. Since 2007, the contest has been given in memory of Robert Barrington Leigh (1986–2006), who was an undergraduate student in math at U of T.
Traditionally, the competition is held on the first or second Saturday or Sunday in March, and currently takes 3-1/2 hours to write. This year the competition will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. There are two ways a student can participate:
(1) If you wish to write in person, show up at Room BA 1160 in the Bahen Building (40 St. George Street) by 10:50 a.m. If you have not already registered with Professor Barbeau, please do so by contacting barbeau@math.utoronto.ca
(2) If you wish to write online using CrowdMark, you must register online no later than Wednesday, March 8 at 11:59 p.m. Here is the link: Undergraduate Mathematics Competition Online Registration Form
(This form applies only to the online session.)
The online competition will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the completed set of solutions must be submitted no later than 3:15 p.m. (to allow time to load the scripts).
There is no fee for the competition and students are required to register with Professor Ed Barbeau at barbeau@math.utoronto.ca.
Please note, students on the Mississauga and Scarborough campuses are welcome to participate. We will try to arrange to have it written on the suburban campuses to accommodate these students.
