Inaugural recipients announced for the Velimir Jurdjevic Graduate Scholarship & Daisy S and John Joseph McCann Family Legacy Fund

The Department has been able to endow two new fellowships for graduate students. These fellowships are based on donations and they are matched, dollar for dollar by the Provost.

The Department of Mathematics community mourns the loss of Peter Rosenthal, a distinguished scholar and beloved professor. Rosenthal began his remarkable career at U of T in 1967 and quickly established himself as a leading expert in operator theory.

James Munday and William Verreault have been awarded Lachlan Gilchrist Fellowship Fund

University of Toronto team places 5th in Putnam Competition

Results from the 2023 Putnam Math Competition were released last week. The Putnam is the premier undergraduate mathematics competition in North America, and (according to Wikipedia) “is widely considered to be the most prestigious university-level mathematics competition in the world”.

Daniel Litt has been awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship

Daniel Litt has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Sloan Research Fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

William Verreault has been awarded a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship

September 12, 2023

William Verreault completed his Undergraduate and Master's degree in Mathematics at Université Laval, receiving over twenty scholarships and honors and participating in research experiences that resulted in conference presentations worldwide and over a dozen papers in diverse areas of mathematics.

Adam Stinchcombe has been awarded a CAIMS PIMS Early Career Award in recognition of his contributions to high-performance computational methods for studying partial differential equations with applications in biology.

Joel Kamnitzer has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada

Joel Kamnitzer has explored geometric objects related to Lie groups, inspired by ideas from theoretical physics. Using these geometric objects, Kamnitzer uncovered deeper structures in the representation theory of Lie groups: especially canonical bases and categorification.
