Julian Cole Lectureship

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
2026

Adrian Nachman has been awarded the Julian Cole Lectureship by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Presented every four years, the lectureship recognizes outstanding contributions in applying mathematical methods to challenging problems in engineering or the physical and biological sciences. Adrian has been recognized for his foundational contributions to imaging science and inverse problems, as well as for the impact of his work on medical imaging.

Adrian received his BSc degree, with Honours in Mathematics, from McGill University in 1974 and his PhD in Mathematics from Princeton University in 1980. He joined the University of Toronto in 2001 as a Professor with a joint appointment in Mathematics and Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research interests primarily focus on inverse problems and Partial Differential Equations arising in Medical Imaging. He has made fundamental contributions to the field of Inverse Problems, solving several well-known, longstanding open problems and introducing powerful methods that are widely used. He has also had a strong and long-held interest in collaborations with researchers in Electrical Engineering, which has led to breakthrough ideas in ultrasound and electromagnetic imaging, as well as the novel use of magnetic resonance imagers to determine conductivity properties of tissue.

Congratulations to Adrian on this achievement.
