The Department of Mathematics is pleased to announce that Kumar Murty has been appointed to the Order of Canada.
The Order of Canada is one of the highest honours for merit in Canada’s system of orders, decorations, and medals. It celebrates individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to society. This prestigious recognition highlights outstanding achievements and distinguished service that have significantly impacted Canada across various fields. Candidates for the Order are rigorously evaluated by an advisory council, which provides recommendations to the Governor General. The honour reflects the Order’s Latin motto, Desiderantes meliorem patriam, meaning “They desire a better country.”
Robert Jerrard, Professor and Department Chair, praised Murty's remarkable accomplishments, stating:
Kumar is a true renaissance man, a visionary number theorist, an entrepreneur and thinker who has also devoted his talents to issues of pressing practical importance such as promoting smart economic growth and mitigating inequality in the developing world.
Murty is renowned for his expertise in analytic and algebraic number theory, arithmetic algebraic geometry, and information security. He has made significant contributions to both theoretical and applied mathematics. He is the founder of the GANITA Lab and co-founder of Prata Technologies and PerfectCloud, organizations advancing innovation in data and information security. His work embodies the intersection of pure mathematical inquiry and practical applications, solidifying his legacy as a visionary academic and innovator.
